SQL Server setup wizard is provided as part of the database server installation files you download from My Esri. You have the option to run the SQL Server installation included with this setup to upgrade your existing instance (database server). Or you can obtain a supported version of SQL Server Express from Microsoft and run it to upgrade your instance.

See Microsoft documentation for instructions on upgrading SQL Server.

With most versions of Microsoft® SQL Server® there is a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. Starting with Microsoft® SQL Server® 2016, you will only be able to install a 64-bit version of the software. If you already have a 32-bit version of an SQL instance installed there is not a traditional upgrade path to convert to a 64-bit platform. To move to a 64-bit platform of Microsoft® SQL Server®, you will need to uninstall the 32-bit SQL instance and then re-install the instance using the 64-bit version.

SQL Server configuration manager is a tool provided by Microsoft SQL Server. When we install SQL Server, it is installed automatically. It is used for the following purposes.

  1. Manage SQL Server services
  2. To manage SQL Server network configuration (32 bit and 64 bit)
  3. To manage the SQL Server native client configuration
  4. Create alias and manage client protocols

The SQL Server configuration manager is a Microsoft console management snap-in and is in the start menu. You can find it once the installation of the SQL Server is completed. To open the configuration manager, Microsoft management console uses the “SQLServerManager<version>.msc” file. For example, if you have installed SQL Server 2019 on the server, then you can open it by running “SQLServerManager15.msc” command.

Migrating from SQL Server 2012 Express 32-bit to 64-bit – SQL Server service won’t start

    Hello All,

1st time poster who’s banging my head against the wall with the scenario mentioned in the subject. I’ll first review the scenario, then what I’ve tried so far in testing and my results, and hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

    Scenario
A copy of SQL Server 2012 Express 32-bit was installed as the database for Autodesk Vault.  Installing the 32-bit version of SQL Server 2012 Express was a mistake and the folks using Vault are seeing performance issues as a result. I’ve been tasked with upgrading the installation to SQL Server 2012 Express 64-bit (and then upgrade to a newer version of SQL Server Express). This is installed on a Microsoft Server 2012 R2 box.

    Proposed Resolution
I have full .bak backup files of all the user databases (Vault & KnowlegeVaultMaster) and all of the system databases (msdb, model, master). From my research & testing so far, I can install the 64-bit version of SQL Server Express 2012 and restore these backups to that installation.

After restoring the database backups to the new 64-bit installation, along with migrating the logins (as detailed here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/918992/how-to-transfer-logins-and-passwords-between-instances-of-sql-server ), I would expect to have a working installation. However, I’ve run into some issues.

I am planning to move SQL Server 2008 R2 Express from XP 32bit to Windows 7 64bit, and I have following questions:

    1. which version of SQL Server (2008 or 2012 , 32bit or 64bit) should I use on a Windows 7 PC?
    2. how to move the database? Copy the .mdf files directly or backup and restore the databases on Windows 7, or generate database scripts from XP and then execute the script on Windows 7?
    3. I used extremely openrowset microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0 statements in the script. On the Windows 7 PC, do I simple change the driver name to microsoft.ace.oledb.12.0 in the script, then it will be ok?
